Abstract
A form of optical polarimetry has been applied to the field of fracture mechanics testing with the aim of eventually developing a more fundamental experimental technique for evaluating the J-integral fracture toughness parameter. In its basic theoretical development, the J-integral is defined as a function of the angular displacement profile of the test specimen over the duration of the test.1
