Abstract

Wide-band and flat-gain fiber amplifier is a key device in wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) transmission systems. Several methods for broadening the gain bandwidth of fiber amplifier have been proposed. The long wavelength band (L-band, 1570-1600 nm) erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) in parallel with conventional band (C-band, 1530-1560 nm) EDFA is most favorable, but its efficiency is poor because of the relative inefficiency of L-band EDFA.1 The broadband EDFA with double-pass configuration has been proposed.2
