Abstract
Quantum communication promises a completely secure way for transmission of secret messages. In practice, quantum communication is restricted to relatively short distances due to photon absorption and other decoherence processes. In this talk I will show how one can overcome these problems by using quantum repeaters. I will also present a proposal for a physical implementation of a quantum repeater based on atomic ensembles and random detection of photons.
