Abstract
Optical fibers with reduced coating dimensions are being seriously considered for several new applications. For example, high-count ribbon cables that contain fibers with an outer diameter of the order of 180 μm are being developed.1 The most immediate reliability concern for thin-coated fibers is the coating’s ability to protect the glass surface from damage induced during routine manufacturing, cabling, or packaging.
