A major challenge that is hindering widespread adoption of augmented reality/virtual reality (AR/VR) technology is the need for users to have well-functioning eyes and visual system to be able to comfortably wear and use head-mounted-devices (HMDs) for any length of time. Eye and vision problems are common and most refractive errors and/or binocular vision problems can be corrected for by prescription eyeglasses. Commercially available HMDs, however, are not designed with the necessary space to allow for a user to wear their own prescription eyeglasses. In some of the more recently advertised HMDs there is the option to buy custom insert lenses, but it is not known if this will include a large enough range of lens options to make it available to anyone who needs prescription correction.

In this work, Kaan Akșit and co-authors have developed a visual perceptual model that can correct the rendered image in the display in such a way that it can accommodate for prescription correction in the order +/-1.50 diopters. Using different image quality measures, they show that their differentiable model offers improvements in colour and contrast. This first step, in trying to solve with software the problem users who need eyeglasses face, is promising and may be the future.
