Imaging of second harmonic generation in the near field of ellipsoidal gold nanoparticles

The interaction of light with metal nanostructures gives rise to strong and spatially localized field enhancement due to lightning rod effects, induced by strong curvatures, and/or to resonant excitation of Localized Surface Plasmons (LSPs) whose frequencies depend on material and shape of particles. Near-field scanning optical microscopy (NSOM), beating the diffraction limit in optical imaging, allows direct mapping of field distribution at the nanoscale. Nonlinear optical effects, such as Second Harmonic Generation (SHG) which depends on the square of the light intensity, can be a highly sensitive probe of field enhancements, providing information which is complementary to that of fundamental wavelength (FW) maps. So far a number of theoretical studies have addressed SHG of nanostructured systems [1] but experimental results in the near field are limited.
