Abstract
When its diameter goes down to or below the wavelength of the light, an optical micro-/nanofiber exhibits interesting properties such as tight optical confinement, high fractional evanescent waves, steep field gradient, enhanced field intensity and large waveguide dispersion, which opens a variety of opportunities for connecting fiber optics with near-field optics, nonlinear optics, quantum optics and plasmonics on a micro or nanoscale.
