Abstract

We discuss the modeling of the performance of modern polarization-multiplexed communications systems in the presence of polarization dependent loss (PDL) and polarization-mode dispersion (PMD). Ways of assessing system tolerance to PDL and methods for increasing this tolerance are discussed.
