Controllable damage on a single mitochondrion by femtosecond laser irradiation

Abstract

Tightly focused femtosecond laser can induce controllable damage to a single mitochondrion and leading to contraction, fission and swelling at sub-micron level. Mitochondrial membrane potential and reactive oxygen species may play a role in this process.
