Abstract

The Internet has been constantly evolving from the mobile Internet to the emerging Internet of Things (IoT) and future Tactile Internet. After showing how ultra-reliable and low-latency communication (URLLC) requirements of future immersive Tactile Internet applications can be achieved by enhancing today’s 4G mobile networks with optical fiber and wireless (FiWi) Ethernet technologies and AI embedded multi-access edge computing (MEC), this paper outlines some research ideas that help tap into the full potential of the Tactile Internet unleashed from restrictions imposed by certain vested interests.
