Abstract
Our study was concerned with the molecular basis of psychophysically-established individual differences in L cone photopigment absorption spectra. We approached the question from two different but related directions and obtained converging results. The first approach was to compare L pigment gene structure with Rayleigh matches in a group (N=50) of color normal males. The second was to compare Nagel anomaloscope intensity settings in deuteranopes (N=10) who, by molecular analysis, were shown to have only a single L pigment gene. Prior signed consent was required of subjects who participated in either study.
