Abstract
Atmospheric visivility is now of concern not only to transportation safety but also to protection of scenic beauty of national parks and certain other areas. There have been air quality visibility models developed that make use of CIE color difference formulae for evaluating the perceptibility of plumes and hazes. We built the Visual Colorimeter for Atomospheric Research (VICAR) that allows one to quantify the subjective experience of color by binocular color matching on site in the natural environment. Objective measurements were also taken simultaneously with a spectrophotometer for comparison and analysis.
