Abstract

It is established that Er doping increases significantly the photorefractive effect in LiTaO3. The mechanisms of increased photorefractivity attributed to Er doping are identified based on studies of Raman and fluorescence spectra. Potential applications toward high-efficiency nonvolatile holographic storage devices with two-color recording are discussed.
