Abstract

We investigate the beam steering properties provided by effects correlated with the thermooptic effect in a planar strontium-barium niobate (SBN) waveguide. Thermally induced modulation of the refractive index in combination with photorefractive effects can (de-)focus, split and manipulate the pump beam. The refractive index pattern induced by a pump beam can be used to deflect and switch a probe beam, with deflection angles of 0.2 rad and switching times below one millisecond.
