Abstract

We describe here some recent measurements on the optical spectroscopic properties of three different crystals doped with transition metal ions: RbCaF3:Rh2+, Li4Ge5O12:Ti4+, and BeAl2O4:Cr3+. The most important results include: (1) the observation of tunable optical gain in a material based on a 4d transition metal ion; (2) the observation of tunable optical gain in a charge transfer band in the blue-green spectral region; (3) the measurement of pump band to metastable state radiationless relaxation rate in Cr3+-doped materials; and (4) the characterization of long range energy transfer among Cr3+ ions in alexandrite crystals at low temperatures.
