Abstract

The trivalent chromium ion has been successfully used as the optical activator in a large number of tunable crystalline laser materials. Some of the unique properties of its d³ electron configuration which have led to this widespread success will be reviewed. Optimization of the performance of this type of laser will also be discussed.
