Abstract
The trivalent chromium ion has been successfully used as the optical activator in a large number of tunable crystalline laser materials. Some of the unique properties of its d3 electron configuration which have led to this widespread success will be reviewed. Optimization of the performance of this type of laser will also be discussed.
