Abstract
Unstable resonators ere useful in obtaining low divergent output with food rod fill and low diffraction losses. However, unstable resonators have previously bean Halted to relatively high gain laser materials since an unstable resonator with low output coupling la vary susceptible to stable node lasing in the nigh Q-portion of the resonator which causes optical damage. An unstable resonator which we have bean able to lase in a low gain configuration uses radially birefringent elements1,2 to support an unstable node of the resonator bat output couples primarily through a partially reflecting mirror. This resonator is not vary susceptible to optical damage since the higher output coupling in the high Q-portion of the resonator allows a stable mode to lase without optical damage.
