Abstract

Cr3+: Gd3Sc2Al3O12 and Cr3+:Gd3Sc1.6Ga3 4O12 Solid state lasers are broadly tunable at room temperature. The low crystal field strength at the Cr3+ site is achieved by the incorporation of the large scandium ion into the lattice. This leads to the broad Cr3+ -fluorescence of the 4T2-→ 4A2 laser transition within a 4-level scheme. Those garnet crystals are suitable for both, longitudinal pumping (krypton-, argon-ion laser) and xenon flash- lamp pumping. Cr3+: GSAG and Cr3+: GSGG crystals were grown by the Czochralski technique. Two inch long rods were prepared. We investigated the laser performance under pulsed flashlamp pumping, the influence of uv-light induced color centers, as well as the resonator design with respect to thermal lensing.
