MN2+ DOPED SPINEL FOR SHORT WAVELENGTH SOLID STATE LASERS

Abstract

Inspection of the Tanabe-Sugano diagrams for all 3d ions reveals, that short wavelength laser emission should be obtained from 3d5 ions like Mn2+ or Fe3+, if a low crystal field is present at the active ion site. In oxidic materials this can be achieved with tetrahedral lattice sites, because for this coordination the crystal field strength is only about 4/5 that of an octahedrally coordinated site. The transition probabilities are expected to be quite low. Because the tetrahedron has no centre of symmetry, at least the Laporte selection rule for parity forbidden d-d transitions is lifted. But all high spin 3d5 transitions are furthermore spin forbidden.
