Abstract

We have made small-signal single-pass gain measurements on a Ti:Al2O3 amplifier, collinearly pumped with 532-nm radiation from a frequency-doubled Q-switched (10 ns pulses) Nd:YAG laser. The gain was measured as a function of the incident pump energy density Ep up to 7.0 J/cm2. Single-pass power gain of e5.3 has been attained at 790.7 nm. The fluorescence lifetime decreased from ~3 μs at low values of Ep to 1.6 μs at the highest value of Ep. This reduction in lifetime is probably due to amplified spontaneous emission (ASE).
