Abstract

Although the concept of a fiber laser is not new, a recent fabrication breakthrough [1] has opened the way to a wide range of fiber optic devices and systems based upon high performance doped fiber. Since the first report of a laser made from single mode fiber produced by this process [2], there has been an explosion of activity in this area. Fiber laser oscillators and amplifiers are fundamentally no different than their bulk counterparts, optically pumped solid state lasers and amplifiers. However, the implementation in a low loss, single mode fiber format dramatically changes many important performance characteristics. The high intensities within the fiber core combined with the long interaction distances result in excellent performance from even low gain transitions and three level systems.
