Spectroscopic Properties and Fluorescence Dynamics in Chromium-Doped Forsterite

The details of the dynamics of the luminescence from chromium doped forsterite are examined. On the basis of the polarized absorption and time resolved emission spectra it is shown that there are at least three different emitting centres present. These are identified as being Cr3+ in both intermediate and low octahedral crystal fields, and tetrahedral Cr4+. The Cr4+ emission was found to have a decay time constant of 2.7 μs at room temperature, and to exhibit thermal quenching, having a decay time of nearly 30 μs at 15 K. Under continuous excitation the principal emitting centre is found to be the Cr4+. The nature of this centre, is discussed, and the crystal field parameters for Cr4+ are obtained.
