Gd3+ ➝ Cr3+ Energy Transfer and Cr3+ Decay Dynamics in Cr3+-Doped GSGG, GSAG, and GGG

Abstract

A rapid energy transfer from the Gd3+ ions to the Cr3+ ions in the chromium doped gadolinium garnets GSGG, GSAG and GGG has been investigated. The process is characterized by a rapid energy migration on the Gd sublattice and a rate limiting Gd3+ ➝ Cr3+ step. The nonexponential Cr3+ decay kinetics are interpreted in terms of the structural disorder of the garnets.
