Abstract

Diode-pumped lasers provide highly efficient sources of 1.064 μm and 532 nm radiation. While scalable high energy systems have been demonstrated using pulsed laser diodes in side-pumped configurations, CW operation has typically been limited to several watts due to the inherent low gain of CW systems. Though end pumping schemes allow for higher mode coupling efficiency between the pump distribution and resonator mode, the tight focus of the diode light into the gain volume induces extreme birefringence and thermal lensing for large pump powers. This ultimately limits the efficient scalability of the configuration. We have developed a diode-array side-pumped Nd: YAG solid-state laser capable of producing 12.5 W multimode output using twelve 5 W laser diodes. Intracavity frequency doubling using KTP and TEM00, operation at 1 O64 μm was performed with result shown in figure 1.
