Abstract

A higher-order loss mechanism is shown to exist in NdrYAG when operated as a cw laser. The proposed higher-order loss is that of an upconversion process that absorbs photons at the lasing wavelength into a non-radiative trap site. The existence of a higher-order loss mechanism is supported by experimental results and by computer modelling.
