Abstract

Superfocussing can suppress the effects of spatial hole burning and thus promote single-mode operation in lasers that would otherwise läse multi-mode. This is done by shaping of the pump light distribution in end-pumped microchip lasers to maximize gain near the mirrors where maximum standing wave overlap of adjacent modes promotes mode gain competition and to minimize gain in the center of the resonator where poor standing wave overlap promotes multi-mode operation.
