Abstract

We have demonstrated synchronous pumping of a quasi-phasematched (QPM) optical parametric oscillator (OPO) using periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) as the nonlinear medium. The results presented here indicate that QPM materials and synchronous pumping are particularly well suited for each other due to their large QPM single pass gain. Depletion efficiencies up to 83% were observed with the OPO oscillating at a signal wavelength of 1.528 μm. Results using PPLN are compared to results using an identical OPO cavity but with potassium titanyl arsenate (KTA) as the nonlinear medium. The PPLN OPO exhibits approximately a four-fold performance improvement over KTA.
