Abstract
Film and electronic light-valve projectors need light sources with high intrinsic brightness. This factor is critical in determining the cost, efficiency, size, contrast, and other properties of a projector. Concentrated arcs have made some progress in brightness in recent years; however, the development of solid-state lasers in all three primary colors dramatically increases the brightness available. Recently developed lasers make it possible for a projector designed with them to compete in efficiency with efficient concentrated arc projectors. While these lasers are still in the laboratory, they may eventually become commercially viable light sources for projectors.
