Abstract

We have identified two low phonon energy hosts that we believe will allow lasing in the mid-IR spectral region (4-10 μm). CaGa2S4 (calcium thiogallate) and KPb2Cl5 (potassium lead chloride) are both non-hygroscopic and readily incorporate rare earth ions. Spectroscopic data for these two crystalline hosts are presented, and the possibility of lasing in the mid-IR at room temperature is discussed.
