Properties of the 1.5 and 2.3µ.m laser emissions of various Tm doped fluoride crystals codoped with Tb or Yb ions

Laser transitions of thulium around 1.5 and 2.3 µm in various (Tm, Tb) and (Tm, Yb) codoped fluoride crystals are investigated via spectroscopy and fluorescence dynamics. Energy transfer parameters involved in such laser systems are deduced and rate equation models are applied to optimize the laser properties (emission wavelength, oscillation threshold in CW regime). Comparison is made between the different materials available (KY3F10, LiYF4 and BaY2F8) and the relative efficiency of the (Tm,Yb) codoping is discussed.
