Abstract
A high-performance, compact, transversely diode-pumped 1.54 µm bulk Er:Yb:Glass laser is described, yielding 360 mJ pulse energy in free-running operation for 2.6 J pump input, with 23% maximum optical slope efficiency. Electro-optic Q- switching, using a LiNbO3 Brewster-cut Pockels Cell, yielded 14 mJ/50 ns single pulse for 1.05 J optical pump energy, with 3.7% max. slope efficiency. Higher Q-switched output energy and efficiency are anticipated if the Pockels cell optical quality and damage threshold problems are overcome.
