Abstract

A Nd:YAG planar waveguide laser, face pumped by multiple diode bars, is found to be capable of high beam quality operation, with 110W in a beam with M2 = 1.8 × 1.13. An analysis of the thermo-optic properties of the waveguide structure shows that a power improvement of up to a factor of 3 is possible for the TE mode of operation of present devices, and that cladding and core thickness may be optimised for larger versions, allowing scaling of this new laser concept towards 1 kW output.
