Laser Ignition of an Automobile Engine by a High-Peak Power Nd:YAG/Cr4+:YAG Laser

Abstract

High-peak power passively Q-switched Nd:YAG/Cr4+:YAG lasers were employed to operate the engine of a Renault automobile. Improved engine stability and decreased CO and HC emissions were measured in comparison with ignition by electrical spark plugs.
