Optical Metasurfaces for GHz Free Space Optical Communications: Prospects and Prototype Validation

Abstract

An all-optical modulation of light based on crystalline silicon metasurfaces is presented, where a carrier-driven absolute amplitude modulation of over 72% is demonstrated with about 100 ps response times.
