Abstract

We study thin yttria films deposited on sapphire and quartz substrates using pulsed laser deposition technique. Emission and excitation spectra of Eu dopants in the films are almost identical to the ones of bulk material. The X-ray diffraction analysis shows a good crystallinity and a [111] growth direction. Light from a blue semiconductor laser as well as from a red helium neon laser was coupled into the films and waveguiding was demonstrated.
