Fabrication of Bragg and long-period gratings using 255nm UV light from a frequency-doubled copper vapour laser

We report fabrication of fibre gratings with Bragg and long-period structures using a new 255nm UV light source generated from a frequency-doubled copper vapour laser. Fibre gratings have been produced in hydrogenated and non-hydrogenated B/Ge co-doped fibres using various combinations of UV power level and exposure time length. The properties of high output (600mW) and the high pulse repetition rate (10kHz) of this laser permitted either writing single grating of high reflectivity (>99%) in two seconds or producing multiple gratings simultaneously. This suggests that the frequency-doubled copper vapour laser is a potential candidate for mass-production of fibre gratings at a low cost in future.
