Abstract

Simple physical models based on antenna theory are used to model, understand and optimise the performance of sidetap gratings for use as wavelength-dependent loss filters. Novel fibre structures are presented that are splice compatible with standard fibre, yet obtain a FWHM bandwidth of only 5 nm, minimal sidelobes, a symmetric response and complete extinction of the leaky mode resonance.
