Abstract

We report on the electro-optic characteristics of poled silica waveguides. It is shown that even for strong internal fields, devices such as Mach-Zehnder modulators demonstrate quadratic modulation characteristics. Also clearly shown is the variation in the permanently induced phase shift as a function of the poling field and a permanent two fold increase in the χ(3) after poling.
