Fast Optical Responses in Isolated Nerves

Abstract

To record optical correlates of fast electrical activation, we are developing techniques to improve the contrast of these small signals. Dark-field illumination significantly reduces background light not scattered by neural processes, however the signal-to-noise remains small. Optimization of polarized light birefringence signals can improve the signal-to-noise by 10-100 fold. Progressive elimination of light not altered by neural processes greatly improves fast optical signals for neural recording.
