Abstract

Reflectance measurement of breast is influenced by the underlying chest-wall which is often tilted as seen by the detection probe. Using our newly developed analytical solution for light propagation in a two-layer tissue structure with tilted interface, we show improved accuracy in estimating the optical properties of both the layers. The results have been verified using data obtained from Monte Carlo simulations and phantom experiments and are now being applied for clinical studies. This improved accuracy in estimating the optical properties of breast tissue and chest-wall is expected to enhance the accuracy of optical tomography of breast tumors.
