Abstract

We have found that the Yb → Ho upconversion process in KYF4 (KYF) is much more efficient than in either BaY2F8 or YLiF4 [1] under the same doping conditions. Long lifetime, low phonon energy, weak self-absorption, and some other unique spectroscopic features make KYF a promising host for an Yb, Ho upconversion green laser. In order to optimize the upconversion efficiency, we have carried out a detailed study on the Ho concentration dependence of the Yb → Ho transfer processes in KYF.
