Abstract

This paper describes the operation of a bistable optical device comprised of a nonlinear Fabry-Perot (NLFP) subjected to Gaussian pulses in the presence of a constant holding intensity. Such a device is suitable for use as a detector of ultrashort pulses. An example of such operation is shown in Fig. 1. In this example the ultrashort pulse switches the constant holding intensity into the upper state of the bistable device only for a narrow range of pulse widths, determined by the time constant of the nonlinearity and the round trip time of the cavity.
