Photodissociation of mercury halides by the excimer laser

Abstract

Cool et al.1 have suggested that laser emission from the atomic Hg analogous to that observed in the photodissociation of Hg2 (Ref. 2) should be possible by using mercury halides. Recently we observed very strong superradiation at 4046.6 Å (73S1 → 63P0) and 4358.3 Å (73S1 → 63P1) from atomic Hg produced by photodissociation of HgBr2 with an ArF sxcimer laser at 193 nm. The spectrogram of laser emission from mercury atoms was shown in Fig. 1.
