Abstract
Corrosion resistance of Te-based optical storage media can be improved by adding a Se-enriched top layer.1 Thin semitransparent Se films deposited onto metal films also serve as AR coatings. Se has a much lower melting point and a volume expansion at melting 8X higher than that of Te; therefore, laser writing characteristics of Se and of Te are expected to be very different. We have used optical and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to study hole formation and other structural changes produced by laser writing on Se-on-Te bilayer films.
