Abstract

The ocular hazards presented to personnel by high peak power lasers can largely be avoided through use of devices operating in the λ > 1.4m spectral region. In this region corneal (water) absorption prevents damaging fluences at the retina; the measured damage threshold of the cornea at 1.73 is 14 J/cm2.1 We report the operation of two eyesafe ranging systems utililizing a 1.73-μm Er:YLF laser.
