Abstract
A high-speed compact optical pulse generator with high peak power can be used for (1) injection locking of microwave semiconductor sources at gigahertz rates, (2) characterization of optical fiber systems (for example, dispersion and transient response), and (3) characterization of high-speed electronic devices. These potential applications provide an incentive for the development of methods which can lead to the generation and time multiplexing of optical pulses at gigahertz rates.
