Brillouin backscatter from gas Jet targets illuminated by a multiline laser source

Abstract

As laser fusion experiments progress toward longer laser pulses and larger targets, it is expected that Brillouin backscatter of the laser radiation could become a major loss mechanism that could reduce coupling of radiation to targets. The increased backscatter results from the longer plasma density scale lengths that have time to develop with long pulses. Longer scale lengths mean longer gain paths for Brillouin reflection.
