Abstract
This paper describes the design and prototype of a 2-D holographic diffraction and scanning system1 for a Universal Products Code (UPC) label reader for supermarket point-of-sales electronic check-out applications. The scanner’s optical fabrication and arrangement are simple compared with conventional UPC scanners. The holographic diffraction scanner consists of a 6-mm thick 13-cm diam glass disk on which a number of lenslike holograms are recorded along the circumferences of two concentric rings.
