Abstract
The development of hollow-cathode metal-ion lasers has attracted considerable attention recently because of their ability to generate multiwavelength output in the visible with comparatively good power and low noise. However, hollow-cathode laser tubes suffer problems arising from difficulties in control of metal vapor pressure, discharge instability, and cathode erosion, and few attempts have been made to develop practical devices.
