K-line x-ray measurements to determine deposition of hot electrons in inertial confinement fusion targets

Abstract

The deposition of hot electrons is critical to the performance and preheat of inertial confinement fusion pellets. Electron deposition can be characterized from Kα x-ray measurements in composite or layered targets. In this technique, the front or outer layer is an electron attenuator of known thickness. It is followed by a substrate of different material used as a Kα emitting electron detector. An electron attenuation curve is obtained by observing the detector layer signal as a function of the attenuator layer thickness. The energy distribution of hot electrons in the target is obtained from fitting a simulated electron distribution to the electron attenuation curve.
